The Human Rights Campaign Fund is the first and largest LGBTQ civil rights organization in the United States. It was created in 1980 by Steve Endean to provide financial support to pro LGBTQ candidates.
In 1992, HRC endorsed Bill Clinton’s Presidential candidacy. They also supported Obama’s re-election in 2012 by raising close to $20 million.
Elizabeth Birch, the executive director in 1993, ordered the removal of the word “Fund” from the initial name. Under her supervision, HRC shifted towards programs far away from politics like Workplace Project.
Today, HRC’s mission is to raise awareness about the problems that the Gay Community has and fight for equal rights. They have over 3 million supporters nationwide, among which are famous public figures like Ellen Page.
