Pete was born on January 19, 1982, and raised in South Bend, Indiana. He has a major in History and Literature from Harvard and a BA with honors from Pembroke College.
Buttigieg began his political career in 2011 when he was elected Mayor of South Bend. During his first term, he made substantial changes in the police department due to the internal misconduct of some of his members. His great performance earned him the “Mayor of the year” award from GovFresh.com in 2013, and he was reelected in 2015 with 80% of the votes.
Pete served as an intelligence officer in the US Navy Reserve and was deployed in Afghanistan in 2014. He left the army in 2017 with the rank of Lieutenant.
On April 14, 2019, he declared from Indiana that he is running for the Democratic Party nomination for the 2020 elections; if elected, he will be the first openly gay President.
