Vans’ road to greatness began when fourteen-year-old Paul Van Doren from California dropped out of school and started working for a local shoe manufacturer. After a long and successful road as an employee, Paul and his brother James opened the first Vans store in California on March 16, 1966.
The company’s iconic logo was designed by James’ son, Mark Van Doren. Initially introduced in Vans’ models #95 and #36, this unique logo is integral to the company’s history. In the late 70s, the company had over 70 stores, selling its apparel to national and international markets. In 1982, Vans achieved a major popularity milestone when Sean Penn wore the classic Slip-Ons in the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Vans’ popularity among Skaters and BMX riders began to rise when they introduced their first signature skate shoe in 1988 and promoted several extreme sports events like the Triple Crown of Skateboarding. FORBES recognized them as one of America’s Best Small Companies in 2000.
Vans is a world-famous company with stores in several countries like the U.S., UK, Spain, and Belgium. They also have two extreme sports parks, one in the United States and the other in London.
